A recent WSJ news article covered the story of a small business completely taken down by a cyber attack. The 2-person firm didn’t even have a website, but hackers accessed their IT environment to run stolen bank cards through the firm’s payment system.

This sneaky cyber attack relied on malware known as a keylogger, which tracks the keys struck on your keyboard.

The malware can be installed on your computer in several ways, such as by clicking a link in an email or opening an attachment. Your computer can also become contaminated just by visiting a website or by inserting an infected thumb drive into a system’s USB port.

Once the keylogger is installed, it operates invisibly. It records everything you type on your keyboard or click with your mouse. Unless you know what to look for, you will not know your actions are being monitored.
