Windows 10 Tightens Security – Privacy Gaps Remain

Despite the controversy surrounding various aspects of Windows 10, the new operating system from Microsoft does include features that can tighten corporate security and make enterprise management easier, especially for organizations in PCI- or HIPAA-regulated environments.

Multifactor Authentication – The ability to use multifactor authentication for PC access is incorporated into Windows 10 at the OS level. It supports either a biometric device or a PIN sent to a mobile device. This is especially useful for securing lost laptops.

Data Loss Prevention – This feature automates the process of monitoring for and masking the transmission of protected data such as Social Security numbers. This capability includes the ability to recognize and transparently encrypt corporate versus personal data, some remote device wiping capabilities, and audit reports.

Application Control – Prior Windows versions allowed users to install virtually any application. Through a facility called “Device Guard”, Windows 10 allows administrators to implement automated controls to disallow the installation of potentially harmful applications.

Phishing Protection – Windows 10 prevents phishing attacks by placing the user access token, which allows continued user access after initial authentication, in a secure container.

While these security measures are helpful, there are critical privacy issues that do need attention – Windows 10 automatically shares Wi-Fi access information with everyone in your contact list, tracks your location, and sends your browsing history to Microsoft. Your IT team can help plug these holes.
